🇰🇪 Kenya Cyber Safety & Defamation Awareness Guide

Kenya's cybercrime laws do not provide a fixed list of "banned words". Legal risk depends on the context, intention, target and impact of communication.

  • Threats: Avoid wording that may suggest intimidation, revenge or harm.
  • Cyber harassment: Repeated unwanted messages, humiliation or targeting a person online may create risk.
  • Defamation: Avoid stating accusations as facts without evidence. Words like "criminal", "thief", "fraud" or "corrupt" can create legal exposure when unsupported.
  • Privacy: Do not publish personal details such as private contacts, identity information or confidential messages.
  • Safer approach: Discuss actions, events and evidence instead of attacking a person's character.
Before posting ask:
☐ Is it factual and can I prove it?
☐ Am I discussing an issue rather than attacking a person?
☐ Could it reasonably be viewed as harassment?
☐ Would I defend this statement publicly?

Example:
❌ "This person is a fraud"
✅ "I have concerns about this matter and recommend review by the appropriate parties."
